Paul Shepheard

Paul is an architect, writer and speaker living in London, England.  His three books published by MIT Press are: What is Architecture an essay on landscapers, buildings and machines, the Cultivated Wilderness about landscapes, and Artificial Love, a new story of machines and architecture.  All highly recommended.  How to Like Everything, his new collection of criticism is soon to be published.  He has lectured at institutions across the UK, the States and Australia.  Here is a short excerpt:

"LIBERTY. Evolutionarily, conditions may stand in for rights. So that liberty's not an ideal but a thing, a pre-existing condition: obvious at the moment it's constrained. Any zoo-fast gorilla can show you that. Anything stuck in a trap. But are the contracts of community traps as well?  The traditions, roots, customs out of which the people in it try to fashion rights - do rights obviate liberty? What are we protesting about when we insist on them but the lack of security? Someone left the trap door open! We yell."
