Place on Earth

Place on Earth is a creative engagement process led by artists to capture the perceptions of young people in cities around the world about climate change and rapid urbanisation. The process will generate new collaborative artworks supported by quantatitive information. Young people’s awareness, understanding and fears about these issues as they affect them in local and global contexts will be used to inform UN delegates and decision and policy makers.

NEWS
Executive Director Michael Woods and our positive approach to climate change >>
In light of the increasing debate about lack of trust in the science and policy of climate change, and the subsequent fear and negativism I felt it was time to clarify Haring Woods point of view. Our practice has always been to explore public realm issues from a positive and constructive attitude; we look for what’s best in people and places and work to make improvements. In our experience, positive energy generates the answers to questions which support well informed decision making on the part of our elected and appointed civic leaders. Our work shows that solutions which benefit the communities we work with come from trust not fear.  With Place on Earth we are engaging head long with the most challenging global problems, not by protest, not by conflict but by helping young people communicate their aspirations and ideas for dealing with the impact of global warming and climate change, by adaptation, mitigation and most importantly through creativity.

Haring Woods Studio and UN Habitat >>
Haring Woods were invited by UN Habitat to develop a new programme to support their youth and climate change initiative, with the focus on communicating young people’s views about climate change, governance and rapid urbanisation to the UN stakeholders and decision makers.

UN Habitat is the only UN constituent which works directly with municipalities. While they administer and support many programmes specifically aimed at young people, Place on Earth will be a valuable conduit between young people, local government and the UN to provide the information delegates need to develop viable  policies on climate change and its impact on rapidly growing cities.

Since the start of the project in April 2009, we have attracted partners in the arts and governance, who respond positively to Place on Earth’s direct route to decision makers.  Our aim is to develop a range of projects through and beyond the UN Summit on Sustainable Development 2012.
