Gunpowder Park is a 90 hectare new country park in Lee Valley Regional Park, at the top of Greater London. Between 2004 and 2009, Haring Woods developed and delivered a five year research and development programme, focusing on arts, science and the environment which explored the role of open space as a catalyst for creativity, collaboration and knowledge sharing.  Haring Woods’ concept for Gunpowder Park was to use the landscape as a focus for a range of creative professionals to imagine and test out new possibilities for our public spaces. This unprecdeneted physical space and freedom was provided with the support of Haring Woods’ team of professionals trained as producers, curators, commissioners and arts managers who have extensive experience creating and producing large scale international events.

This experimental program positioned the Park as a significant regional and international resource for research and development into how arts and culture can affect our open spaces. Over the five years, Gunpowder Park attracted international artists and organsations across disciplines, such as American theatre designer and artist Robert Wilson, arts and science agency Arts Catalyst who co-produced the 2nd International Artists Airshow and Brandon Ballengee’s EcoventionsCapture by Karen Lois Whiteread with Wysing Arts, and student residencies Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.

The two core programmes to be developed out of Gunpowder Park were Bright Sparks, a unique funding initiative which gave grants to 11 projects to explore the physical and social aspects of our open spaces, and the Art of Common Space, an international programme of artist commissions and events exploring the future possibilities of our common spaces.  The culmination of the Gunpowder Park programme was showcased through the Art of Common Space programme in a large scale event at the Park in March 2009.  Read more >>

This innovative programme for Gunpowder Park was developed on the basis of Haring Woods' 2003 Feasibility Study for the Park. We agreed a 5 year partnership with the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority in 2004 to develop and manage the identity and programming for the Park. To facilitate this contract, Haring Woods formed Landscape+Arts Network Services (LANS) was established as a not for profit company specialising in arts and environment initiatives.  Core funding was provided by Lee Valley Regional Park Authority, with programming funds from Arts Council England and a range of public / private sector partners, supplemented by Haring Woods.

In partnership with arts and science agency the Arts Catalyst, Haring Woods developed a number of differet projects throughout the five year proramme, including the 2nd International Artists Airshow and a series of Ecoventions with artist/biologist Brandon Ballengee.
